The Showdowns We All Secretly Wish Would Just Happen Already

Do you ever watch K-pop award shows and see competing idol groups walk by each other and find yourself in the darkness of your room in front of your livestream, secretly chanting,

“Fight, fight, fight…”

If K-pop is all about competition, it’s definitely not something we’re supposed to know about. In this candy coated sex machine of an entertainment industry, all the ugly that we just know is going on the behind the scenes somehow always seems to get conveniently swept under the rug until dust bunnies turn into bombs. And sure, fans fight, companies fight, but surely not unnie and oppar right?(...)

[Interview] Aimee Lee Lucas Talks About Working with YG, Choreography and More

Last month, before KPOPCON 2013 “Volume UP!” at UC Berkeley, we had the amazing opportunity to interview choreographer Aimee Lee Lucas. At the event, she was the keynote speakers and also had a dance workshop to teach the choreography for EXO‘s “MAMA.”

Staring as an assistant choreographer in Korea for Uhm Jung Hwa, she went on to work with big K-Pop names such as Big Bang, Taeyang, G-Dragon, Se7en, and 2NE1. She has performed next to some of the largest male soloists of YG Entertainment including Se7en, Taeyang, and G-Dragon as the lead girl in “Them Girls”, “Sinner”, “My Girl”, and “Breathe”. She also choreographed Park Bom’s single “You and I” and the staging for G-Dragon’s first solo concert “Heartbreaker.”

In our interview, Aimee Lee Lucas talked about working with YG, how she started out as a choreographer, and her current projects.

Through her M.V.P (Music Video Party), she teaches K-Pop dance classes to fans in many cities around the world.  For more information, be sure to check out Aimee Lee Lucas’ Facebook, YouTube, and website at http://www.aimeeleelucas.com.

Is This the Vacation You Wanted? Idols and Working Holidays

When I heard that MBC was going to air SHINee on separate vacations in SHINee’s Wonderful Day, I did what any K-pop blogger would do: I got on Tumblr and fired off a curmudgeonly post. “SHINee, it’s not a vacation if a camera crew follows you around.” Hah! That’ll show SM Entertainment I’m not fooled by their trickery.

However, when I watched the Lunar New Year Special and subsequent uncut episodes (still currently airing), the experience was completely different than I imagined. Gone was the stilted, scripted quality of many variety shows, and the boys seemed to be genuinely having a good time. It felt more “real” than any other variety I’ve watched. Could this possibly be a vacation? And if not, what is it?

While these filmed “vacations” are not extremely common in K-pop, they are not unprecedented. Just last year Antonia wrote about T-ara’s FREEDOM Europe excursion, and 2NE1 aired their “Vacation Stories” on 2NE1 TV in 2009. If we stretch further back, there’s TVXQ’s Bonjour Paris, not to mention everything TVXQ-related that was labeled a “vacation,” but was actually a drama or variety show.

I’d like to specifically think about the filmed vacations as opposed to the plethora of vacation photobooks. In a photobook, maybe we can see our idols appearing more relaxed, but it’s still a glossy, posed, static product. When idols are filmed, a level of separation is lifted. A camera still shapes viewer experience, but what we are watching are the idols’ reactions in the moment. In theory, filmed vacations give us idols unfiltered. (More on that later.)

First, let’s look at what a vacation is. The simplest definition is a time of rest from obligations, particularly by traveling for recreation. There is also an added sense of personal choice and privacy. Rest, no responsibility, personal choice and privacy — not things you usually associate with K-pop idols.

It’s safe to say these filmings are not actual vacations, because the idols still have to work. In the case of TVXQ or T-ara, there was an accompanying photobook that they had to shoot, making their videos seem more like travel guides than vacations. Even if no other product is attached, there is a camera rolling at all times, adding pressure to look good, both physically and personality-wise.

Also, if you were to tell an idol, “You get three days off,” how many of them would choose international travel over spending time with family and friends? In the reality TV, idols-on-vacation world, vacation equals travel. Actually, 2NE1’s “Vacation Stories” seems the most like an honest holiday to me, because the girls traveled to spend time with family and friends.

Therefore, it’s easy to be cynical when it comes to filmed vacations. They are for promotional purposes, like SHINee’s 10-week Wonderful Day coupling nicely with their comeback. They are another way for companies to make money (hello, photobooks and DVDs). You could even think of them as a way for companies to give idols a “vacation” without actually giving them a one, which just makes everything seem all the more evil.

Despite the cynicism, these filmed vacations have melted my heart, because they demonstrate all the good of recreational travel. The aimless wandering and quietness inherent in all the mentioned examples make them different from chaotic varieties or pre-prepped interviews, giving a genuine feel to the shows. While idols can’t be fully “off” in front of the camera, these vacation filmings might be the closest fans come to seeing idols let their hair down, due to the inevitabilities of travel. It’s as if through mimicking a vacation, the show becomes a pseudo-vacation, not just strictly work. SHINee’s Wonderful Day in particular emphasizes spontaneity, personal growth and rest.

One of the best things about travel is spontaneity. Plans derail and change constantly, and no amount of scripting can help that. Seeing Minho frantically try to catch a train that keeps getting cancelled due to heavy rain is suspenseful, because as powerful as SM is, they cannot control the UK rail system. What if he can’t get the train and see Man Utd play?! His dreams will be crushed! While these vacations are not action-packed (and would lose their sincerity if they were), the small, unexpected moments show how idols react to change and what’s important to them, while giving viewers opportunity for empathy, since we’ve all experienced the joys and pains of travel.

While on these trips, the idols’ job is to interact with a new environment, which gives us different insight into their personalities. International travel is pretty cool no matter the reason, and we see that idols can be as awed by a place or person as much as we are with them. Though T-ara’s FREEDOM viewed like a long photo shoot, it’s clear Hyomin was taken with Milan, as she constantly snapped pictures. For another example, in Paris, Yoochun pinpointed a Siberian husky in a cafe as his favorite moment, which demonstrates his personality better than a standard interview.

In the case of SHINee, they interact with strangers more, and we see how they communicate with people in other countries. These interactions might be the biggest benefit for the idols themselves, as they allow for personal growth and reflection. It’s worth mentioning that SHINee’s and 2NE1’s videos seem the most like vacations probably because the members are traveling separately and therefore allowed more personal choice and random interaction.

Lastly, a vacation wouldn’t be a vacation without rest. These vacations tug at one of the most basic fan desires — to see our idols happy and healthy. Idols may not be able to fully rest on these trips, but the work might be more relaxing than the usual daily schedule. (Maybe.) I nearly burst with fangirl joy seeing Onew eat good food in Thailand. This is weird, I know, but I can’t deny that if I could give SHINee — or any group for that matter — anything, it would be time to rest.

Of course, I’d rather them have a real vacation, but as far as reality TV goes, I think these vacations add new insight into our idols and are surprisingly fun to watch.

Readers, are you watching SHINee’s Wonderful Day? Do you have a favorite idol vacation? Better yet — which idols would you send on vacation if you could?

For Your Viewing Pleasure: The March of YG

Welcome back to For Your Viewing Pleasure, where we take the time out of the week to share with you all some of the best and most recent photos tied to the K-pop landscape.

So far, the beginning of the year has been kind of quiet on the domestic YG front. So what exactly have YG artists been up to? While some have been busy globetrotting, others have been recording; some have been doing both, and almost all have been spending some time posing in front of the cameras.

Amazingly, all four of the ladies of 2NE1 were independently shot to be published in the March 2013 issues of four different fashion magazines (Elle, Allure, Marie Claire, and Harper’s Bazaar), with the bonus addition of Dara (the new face of Clio cosmetics) simultaneously securing the March cover CeCi Beauty as well!

Here is a selection of some of my favorite photos of YG artists from recent publications or photo releases:(...)

The 2012 Eat Your Kimchi Awards Winners

EYKAs 2012

Ladies and Gentlemen, the time is finally ripe for us to announce the winners of the first annual Eat Your Kimchi Awards! We announced the nominees on December 4th, and let you vote until December 20th. We got nearly 1,000,000 votes altogether, and some really interesting results!

So, without further ado, here are our videos announcing the winners! We say video[s] because it’s just too long to be one video. Almost 20 minutes! So we broke it up into two parts. Part 1 was embedded above as a playlist, but playlists sometimes don’t work on mobile devices (I think?) so here’s part 2:

Ok, some side notes:

1) Yes, that is our new studio you saw us filming in! It’s still got a lot of stuff needed in it, but it’s otherwise all constructed! We still need some technical stuff, like lights and acoustic dampers, so the studio is still not very well lit and VERY VERY ECHO-EY! Also, we don’t have any furniture in it, so we can’t actually sit down anywhere. We just have our work desk, which is the most important thing. We want to do a live chat and show you the whole thing, but we want to show it to you when it’s ready, you know? There are also some small but very important design things that need to be done, and we don’t want to reveal the studio until it’s all ready. So hang tight! We’ll show you it all soon!

2) OHH WE TROLLED YOU SO HARD LIKE THE MAMAs! Congrats Busker Busker on winning Rookie of the Year! Ha! No, but seriously, the votes between EXO and B.A.P. were so close that it’s not really fair to say that one won over the other, though B.A.P. did get just a smidgen more. It was exceptionally even throughout, but I know you’d all kill us if we didn’t announce a winner. So, yay! Congrats to B.A.P.! And thanks to Brad for being such a good sport and agreeing to be a part of our skit. For those of you who still don’t know about Busker Busker, they were probably the biggest band of the year in Korea. Our studio is in Hongdae, right beside the university, and there’s a giant freaking building with Busker Busker’s pictures all over them. It’s, like, 5 stories tall. Haven’t seen that for any of the other rookie groups, FYI. DON’T GET MAD! We’re just telling you what it’s like in Korea. The internet world and the real world don’t always align.

3) Congrats to U-Kiss for winning the Male Band of the Year! We really wanted to do something with U-Kiss, and spoke with them, but we planned and filmed this all so extremely last minute and didn’t give them enough headway. We spoke with Kevin, though, and he was really surprised and happy that you all voted for U-Kiss. Great job, guise!

4) Yes, we made a Golden Spudgy Award for the ceremony. We only made one, though, and we’re not giving it away to any band. 17 won: how to we pick just one to give away? We have the form for it, at least, and we’ll be able to make a lot more for next year’s awards, and next year we’ll be more ready, so we’ll tell the companies well in advance of our shooting the video. Hopefully we’ll be able to get more people coming to the studio by then to pick up the awards! Also, we didn’t actually make the Golden Spudgy ourselves, mind you (that’s FARRR too beyond our abilities). We hired a university art student to make it. Yay for supporting local artists! We’re just going to keep that Golden Spudgy for ourselves in our studio so we can remember the first video we shot there :D

4) This video had so many freaking bloopers, probably because it was just such a long video with so many things happening in it. If you feel like seeing us mess up some more, here are the bloopers below.

Last side note: the voting page isn’t open any more, because we closed it to tally the votes, but we’re going to reopen it ASAP. Our developer’s away at the moment, but as soon as he’s back the results will go public again!

Manufactured Girl Power: Female Empowerment in a Male-Powered Industry

K-pop is an industry run by men. From the CEOs of the mega-corporations, to those who control the record labels, to those who control the music, to those who control the artistic direction, to those who control the talent, K-pop is largely produced by a majority of men. In such a male-dominated industry, how is it that there exists acts which tend to defy the patriarchic conventions of men? With the likes of 2NE1 and miss A, this relatively new concept of the strong, independent woman carries with it many overtones of female empowerment, but nevertheless, it’s still one which is essentially designed by men.(...)

A Not So Warm Welcome – D-Unit

In August of this year D-Business Entertainment debuted its first girl group (and stuck with D theme), D-Unit. Clocking in at only three members and hailing from an agency with relatively authentic hip-hop credentials, anticipation was running as high as it can without a Big 3 endorsement. Pre-debut fan signs in Japan stirred the interest of netizens already excited by the news that YG’s inhouse producer Kush had a hand in the title track. The group opened for an international music festival, received televised endorsements from industry seniors and had generally positive reviews of their album.

All to little avail. Granted, theirs is a problem shared by countless rookies; 2012 is on track to exceed 2011’s jaw-dropping slew of debuts and D-Unit’s struggle to impress perfectly illustrates the pitfalls of this oversaturated industry. But this is only one in a series of unfortunate events that have undermined D-Unit’s success.

Teach Me How to Dougie

Recently there seems to be a growing trend of K-pop adopting these American hip hop dance crazes into their choreography, with a particular focus on the “Dougie” and the “Cat Daddy“. What makes these dances particularly interesting is that they are pretty individualized – they’re all about showing off your unique style and how much swag you have compared to everyone else, which is why there are about a billion different ways to dance them (just look up tutorials on Youtube). So where do these moves fit in K-pop, where choreography is meant to make the band members look more uniform and leaves little room for the type of improvisation you might see on the dance floor? Well, let’s take a look.

The Cat Daddy:

The first time I saw an American dance fad in K-pop was in Kim Hyun-joong’s “Break Down”. I wasn’t exactly sure what I was watching at first, but after rewinding it a few times as well as watching the dance practice videos, there was no doubt in mind that he was doing the Cat Daddy. As excited as I was at his attempt, that’s really all it was to me – an attempt. To me, his Cat Daddy looked really forced and awkward, especially since the rest of Hyun-joong’s choreography was still verging on the pop boyband side despite the music video’s attempt at a tougher look. All in all, I wasn’t a huge fan, though it was a good start.

If It Ain’t Broke, Why Fix It?

As an ELF (and more broadly as a fan of K-pop) it constantly surprises me just how much criticism Super Junior cops for its failure to evolve musically following their success with “Sorry Sorry” — so much so that a comeback isn’t complete until its similarities to their 2009 hit have been thoroughly discussed, spurned and the entire venture dismissed. But is this kind of relentless criticism fair to groups that have little to no control over their image? Even then, should any group come under fire for capitalising upon their greatest success?

Idols Choose the Best of the Best Amongst Themselves

Who really is the best dancer among idols? Or the best singer? Put your biases aside! The idols have voted and chosen among themselves who the best of the best really are.

To celebrate their fifth anniversary, Sports Donga surveyed seventy current idols to vote for the best idol groups in five categories: Best Vocalist, Best Rapper, Best Dancer, Best Visual, and Best TV Presence. Each category was divided by gender and the winners were determined purely by the number of votes. Check out the winners (and the runner ups)  and see what other idols had to say about the them.

The idol groups who participated in the survey are Girl’s Day, Nine Muses, Rainbow, miss A, Big Bang, Girls’ Generation, B.A.P, Shinhwa, CNBLUE, AOA, FT Island, EXO-K, MBLAQ, U-KISS, ZE:A, JJ Project, JYJ, G.NA, 2AM, 2PM, KARA, and 15&.

2NE1 – I Love You: Kpop Music Mondays

2NE1 I Love You

This almost got reviewed last week, because so many people voted for it almost instantly, but it just narrowly didn’t make it to first place. This week, though, it was head and shoulders above everyone else’s video. Assah! We get to review 2NE1′s “I Love You”. Check it out here if you haven’t already:

So, we talked about a bunch of stuff in the video, but there were a few things we cut out of our script for fear of making the video too long. Let’s talk about them here:

The outfits in this video. Remember when I ripped into f(x)’s wardrobe stylist for their horrible mismatched tacky designer clothing? This 2NE1 video is an example of how to do funky clothing correctly. They’re making use of interesting clothing, that – yes – you may not necessarily wear yourself (I’m looking at you CL with your leather hight waist underpants and fishnet stocking in the snow and on a train) but STILL they look really fabulous, and their clothing and accessories match! It’s like funky meets couture clothing, without looking cluttered. I know some people won’t like their outfits, and hey, we all have different opinions, but if I had to chose someone to dress me, i’d pick 2NE1’s stylist any day.

Also, Park Bom loves her knee. She hugs it a lot.

Another thing: is it just us or do 2NE1 have really simple song titles? I Love You, Hate You, It Hurts, Go Away. We could be reaching here, but there seems to be a pattern of simplicity here, like they’re interested in just hitting on those basic emotionally charged themes. We didn’t flesh this idea out much, but we had made a song for the jerky part just in case we did (because we like making cheesy covers of Kpop songs). Check it out here!

Lastly, if you’re digging the song as much as we are, pick it up over on iTunes. Oh! And if you’re here to see who won the ZE:A Limited Edition CDs from when we did our Interview with ZE:A, we announce them in the bloopers below! They’re right at the end of the bloopers, and we took screenshots of the winning answers for once, so…yeah! Check out if you won, or just watch it to see Simon be nastier than usual, YOU NASTY PEOPLE YOU!

KpopCharts Update: Love Sexy Money

2NE1 - I LOVE YOU

2NE1 “I Love You” – Vote for them here

Ok, this song is obnoxiously stuck in our head. It even gets to the point that one of us just starts thinking about the song, and then the other is like “damn I can’t stop singing it in my head”…A FEW SECONDS AFTER THE FIRST PERSON STARTS THINKING ABOUT IT! There’s something really freaky about that. We do that sometimes with other things apart from music right away, and it makes conversations a bit awkward when we stop the conversation and yell at the other person to get our of each other’s head. JUST AWKWARD. I guess it’s because we’re so close and sappy and all that mushy crap.

Woo Young “Sexy Lady” – Vote for him here!

Holy snap: we must review this song. The dance is great, and just waiting for us to talk about it. And all the cheesy lens flares! Oh god! We could have so much fun with this! And the beat of the song: wow! We sometimes recreate the beats of Kpop songs for our skits, like our Junsu’s Intoxication song, which you hear every time there’s something sexy going on in our videos. But this beat? JESUS IT’S SO EASY!

BUH BUH BUHHHHH BUH
BUH BUH BUHHHHH BUH
BUH BUH BUHHHHH BUH
BUH BUH BUHHHHH BUH

That’s it for 4 minutes and 34 seconds. We could totally give you the best Kpop cover song ever, if you just vote this in, SO DO IT!

Wonder Girls “Like Money” – Vote for them here!

Let’s get a vote here: is this Kpop or not? Even YouTube isn’t sure about it.

(Which, by the way, we’re finding it cool that YouTube is tweeting about Kpop more often lately).

Anyhow, I hope our explanation of why we included this video on the charts is fair. Or, if it ain’t fair, we’ll just claim being biased because it’s in English and YOU KNOW WE LOVE US SOME ENGLISH! Kpop songs entirely in English fit the spirit of this site, though, since we’re really interested in Kpop’s impact on the West. Trust me, guise: when we go to Japan one of these days months years, we’ll start reviewing Japanese songs, including Kpop songs in Japanese. OK WE’LL DO IT ONE DAY PROMISE! Just…we’re not sure when we’ll go there, but it is a dream of ours to live there one day. We just like it here too much to go! Promise us you’ll still watch our channel if we move, k?

K Crunch Cocktail: Lollipop Color Love

2PM My Color

*Martina steps into a bar* Hello, I would like the most rainbowlicious cocktail you have, shaken twice, over the rocks, sprinkled with pink sugar, and served in a hollowed out Korean cell phone with tiny paper cut out figures of CN Blue wrapped around a straw. MMMM. That’s the best way to describe this week’s K-Crunch Cocktail. One of the things extremely original to Korea (and maybe other places but not Canada) is the use of Kpop singers to advertise a variety of things. From beer, to cell phones, to ramen, to chicken delivery, to clothing, to just about everything. It feels like it’s a big deal when a pop star advertises something unrelated to music in North America. I still remember the big deal of Britney Spears dancing in an epic Pepsi commercial, but you certainly wouldn’t see her advertising 4 different things at once. In Korea, no problem. Which leads us to our first cell phone related song, 2PM’s “My Color”.

1) 2PM – My Color

It’s another…JAY WHY PEE!!! This 2PM song might be one of my all time favourite kpop songs EVARRRR!!!! I was so surprised that my students (I was teaching when it came out) were so unimpressed by this song and video, but I think it came out during the whole Jay Bum member toss out scandal, so they were not digging 2PM. Interesting right? My students sided with Jay Bum and started to dislike 2PM. Anyhoo, this video was really quirky with the creepy clown like laughing ringmaster pulling 2PM’s strings like a puppet master, but the boys have never looked so so great in my opinion. Also, it was the first time I ever had a jaw drop moment for the members of 2PM. Maybe it was the masks and my deep childhood love for Tuxedo Mask is being placed onto this 2PM video, but there is just something about this video. I’ve been a fan of Taecyeon ever since we met 2PM (the video for that meeting ended up not being made due to the power of MIDDLE MANAGEMENT) and he was the nicest guy to both us, and to the fans screaming from the sidelines. When I saw him in this video I was so shocked because he was all sassy and confident, staring down the camera with hip hop swag oozing out of his pores. And OMG the dance. Poor Taecyeon is being left out of the ringmaster’s circle because he knows the power of persuasion Taecyeon will have with his awesome-quick-jump-dance-hand-down-the-face-ab-move, which might I add, I try to imitate all the time and it’s really really hard. Now yes, I know his cornrows look a little odd at first, but he really manages to pull it off with his eyebrow flexing. OH MY GAWD I JUST FIGURED IT OUT!!! HE REMINDS ME OF TOP IN THIS VIDEO!!! Young eyebrow flexing TOP but with an incredible body. Wow. Anyways, besides their looks, the song is SO DAMN CATCHY! You’ll be listening to this song on repeat. Yup. Now go! Watch and be amazed at Taecyeon and also guy who is dressed all in back and I don’t know his name.

2) 2NE1 ft Big Bang – Lollipop

Lolllllii lollliii ohhhhh lollliiipop. What an awesome song for a much cooler phone then the My Color phone. I wanted a stupid Lollipop phone SO BADLY not because of 2NE1 because at the time they were nobodies, but because it was so cute! I didn’t get one *sob* and now I’m stuck with this crappy slide phone that’s like a million years old but still ahead of the North American phones. Hahahahaaaaaaa but seriously. This song is SOOOOO GREAT. I originally had watched it for the Big Bang guest appearance (and I LOVED TOP’s style in this video…and now that I think about it, I think Simon has those glasses) but quickly thought that 2NE1 was so totally original in the world of female kpop groups. YG wasn’t afraid to present 2NE1 as a quirky fun group over being a pretty cutey girl group. The dance was really easy and catchy as well and the colours in the video are just so bright and vivid. I’m pretty sure it could be used to babysit children with it’s fun tune and ridiculous costumes. Once again, how awesome of a way to advertise your phone, right? People played this song blasting from every cell phone store, restaurant, and clothing shop and it was always in your head. Wait, was I brainwashed into wanting that lollipop phone? *deadpan stare* I still want it.

3) CNBlue “Love Girl”

Last up is CNBLUE [FIRST STEP + 1 THANK YOU] Title [LOVE GIRL] M/V Full ver. Aka Love Girl. What’s up with the confusing title’s kpop bands? Or should I just blame the YouTube uploaders in charge of your channel. Anyways, this song is very cute and peppy and it reminds me of a young Beatles song with it’s innocent “all my looovee” and it’s “L-O-BWEE-E GIRL”. It’s really very lovely. The video though, makes me laugh because there is something creepy about my poster secretly watching me in my room and jumping out and playing with my clothing and jumping on my bed with their shoes on—oh wait, she naps with her shoes on in bed, so I guess that’s the norm in this house. It’s also normal to have no instincts of survival because this girl is the most oblivious human I have ever witnessed in a music video. “OH, IS EVERYTHING OKAY IN HERE!!??*stares at room and boy wearing nightshade as lamp* YUP! IT SEEMS FINE” but then, big surprise ending, it turns out she was just dreaming! Yup! But she’s still wearing her shoes in bed. No recovery there. Thanks to our requester who is from Norway (I think) and NOT ENGLAND as Simon seems to think, but thanks to Simon for telling me that and making me look like a jackass on YouTube. Guess who’s getting bum smacks tonight!

On March 19 at 1:00 PM, Korean local time, singer Se7en entered Uijoungbu 306 Reserve Battalion surrounded by approximately 100 fans.

When asked about his thoughts and plans in the army, especially since he would be older than most, Se7en answered, “It doesn’t matter how old I am. I will do my best.”

Se7en was also asked about his feelings toward actor Yoo Seung Ho, who recently enlisted. Se7en replied, “I really admired Yoo Seung Ho for enlisting quietly, unlike me. (Laugh) I am so grateful for all the love and support from my fans for 10 years. For the next two years, I will work hard, not as singer Se7en, but as Choi Dong Wook. I will stay healthy and will enjoy this experience. I would like to thank everyone for coming, and again, I will do my best.”

When asked to pick a girl group he would like to have for a visit, Se7en answered, “I would like everyone to come and perform. As for a girl group, other than 2NE1, Girls’ Generation would be nice. I will miss everyone.”

SB Bite: 2NE1 for #will.i.am

20120805_seoulbeats_clwilliamThe 2NE1-will.i.am news is  becoming more and more frequent; following their collaboration for Intel’s latest campaign, “Take The World On,” comes the announcement that the YG girl group will be one of the featured artists on Black Eyed Peas front-man will.i.am’s upcoming album, #willpower.

2NE1 and will.i.am have been in collaboration mode for a while now, with the latter producing the foursome’s first English album. But “Take The World On” is the first official, large-scale outcome from this partnership, and its continuation with will.i.am’s trend-ready album is a good sign that we may be getting just that bit closer to getting our hands on a 2NE1 English album. And with news of SNSD and RaNia’s upcoming US activities, it looks like fans have a lot of the global lingua franca to look forward to from the ladies of K-pop.

#willpower drops on the 23rd of April. Are you looking forward 2NE1′s appearance on the album, readers? Or are you more wary? Leave your thoughts and more below!

Se7en Snaps Photo with Teddy and Big Bang’s Taeyang

Can’t believe it’s almost time for Se7en to go!

On March 18, YG Entertainment posted a picture of Se7en on their official facebook page along with several other celebrities under the title “MYCLIQUE. Photo by G-DRAGON @xxxibgdrgn • Instagram”

Inside the picture, 2NE1’s former stylist Seungho, Big Bang’s Taeyang, YG’s hitmaker Teddy and Se7en posed for the camera. The photo can easily depict their possible emotions regarding Se7en’s temporary absence. Seungho looks angry that he’ll no longer be able to see Se7en frequently, Taeyang holds his hands together like he’s praying for Se7en’s safe return and Teddy is just chill, knowing Se7en will make a safe return.

Meanwhile, his military enlistment date is on March 19 and will head to Gyeonggido Province to be a part of Uijeongbu 306 Reserve. He will be on active duty for 21 months, which roughly marks December 2014 as his date back to society.
